Flaming Creatures/IXE

10 July, 8:30 pm, Gloria Kino

In Flaming Creatures New York performance artist (and proto-punk) Jack Smith stages his favourite Hollywood obsessions as an “impromptu” spectacle. Sternberg-inspired devices and the gaudy glamour of “Cobra Woman” Maria Montez serve as the points of departure in a delirious, rip-roaring orgy with stark poses and limp sexual members caught on psychedelically faded film. Anarchic comedy meets apocalyptic utopia. In-your-face children’s theatre as a bargain-bin fantasy of heaven.
Lionel Soukaz’s IXE is post-queer-punk from 1980 – a scandalous, imploding, crucified, and quartered film. The four points of the compass, and the four points of the cross are war, sex, religion and drugs. Banned for a period of time (as was Flaming Creatures), the film was recently restored on 35mm by the French National Film Archives (CNC). According to Guy Hocquenghem, the title IXE is meant to be pronounced like a scream, like a wound. “Let IXE be the shiver of life, that thing that gives you goose pimples.” (Lionel Soukaz)
