De grote vakantie (The Long Holiday)

“People living close to the abyss, using pretty, make-believe stories as a consolation in the face of nothingness.” Thus begins a deeply touching film about the fear of dying and the joy of living. The great Dutch documentarian, Johan van der Keuken, embarks on a last, curious journey around the world after having been told that his prostate cancer has again progressed. His search for a therapy is woven, counterpoint-style, into the free-jazz flow of the film, which makes for unexpected juxtapositions and links. “If I can’t create images, I’m dead,” Van der Keuken says once, off-camera, when the lights go out in a Brazilian disco: sans soleil, without light, there are no images; without images there is no life. De grote vakantie is a final tribute to the power of images: cinema and life seen as one.
